Artificial Grass Between Pavers Overview

Anyone can install artificial grass between pavers. But no matter how simple it sounds, it takes a certain amount of skill and expertise for a person to pull off a clean look for their artificial grass. To install artificial grass properly, you would need to follow precise instructions as well as have the patience to sit through everything.

It's a painstaking and incredibly time-consuming activity that would take you at least an hour to go through everything and ensure that your materials are in their right place. You must also need to be keen on details ensuring that things like excess grass, the direction of grass blades, and avoiding too much infill in your artificial turf will be observed at all times. It avoids having to encounter more problems caused by improper artificial turf installation, such as drainage issues.

Skill Set: Between Intermediate and Expert

So how do you distinguish an intermediate versus an expert when it comes to installing artificial grass? Let's look at the stark difference between the two in the following descriptions below.

Intermediate

  • When it comes to installing turf ribbons or drainage holes, an intermediate installer may be familiar with the tools and can handle the project with much ease.

  • They have some knowledge of the infill process and have confidence in going through every step of the installation process.

  • May need the aid of written or video instruction to further clarify how certain techniques should be done when, for example, installing synthetic turf ribbons.

  • May consult with other experts from time to time to get the best tips on how to accomplish certain steps, such as putting up temporary spikes better or how to drill drainage holes effectively.

  • The quality of the installation may not be as polished or beautiful as an expert's and may include some flaws in certain areas.

Expert

  • Has full knowledge of all tools needed, the different types of artificial grass that can be used, and other landscaping processes such as how to install infill, or keep artificial grass blades in the same direction.

  • An expert shows complete confidence in going through each step of the process. You can see them perfectly installing proper drainage or making your artificial lawn and its grass fibers resemble natural grass without much effort.

  • Their mastery of the technique is more advanced compared to someone with intermediate skills or knowledge.

  • An expert's fees will be understandably more expensive than inexperienced installers when working on artificial lawns.

Time to Complete: DIY vs Hiring

The cost of going the DIY route in your turf installation means that you can save hundreds from labor costs, in which you'll only pay for material or tools, with fake grass costing from $2 to $5. Should you decide to have a professional do it for you, you may spend thousands of dollars just as they will focus on all the turf sections, ensure there's adequate drainage, as well as providing ample lawn care on your new turf. Guide to Installation Fake Grass Between Pavers

Here is the step-by-step process that both intermediate and experts alike do when installing fake grass between pavers.

Step 1: Prepare the area

You may want to clear the concrete layer of your paver from dirt and large debris such as rocks and twigs, or loose stones.

Step 2: Install Sub-base

The sub-base is quite important, especially in paving stones as it also assists in good drainage. you can start by laying the sub-base layer with a depth of around two to four inches. Ensure that there's enough space so that your fake grass can lay flush on your pavers.

Step 3: Lay down your artificial turf

Start filling the area with your artificial grass. It helps if you let it stand for approximately four hours under the sun so that the greens will settle letting you see the paver edge outline more clearly. The turf fibers lined up should always face the same direction.

Step 4: Nail placement

For soil installation, you must place nails in the sub-base between your pavers so you can work without worrying about it moving much. For concrete surfaces, you can just use your own weight for proper securing on your turf for as long as the turf does not shift in place.

Step 5: Cutting artificial grass around the pavers

Holding your box cutter at a 45° angle, you can start cutting around the paver. You should have a gap of about an eighth of an inch between the pavers and fake grass. Make sure to cut evenly by doing it in small increments.

Step 6: Secure the seams

When you hide nail placement well, the final appearance of your fake turf looks more polished. You can also use a smaller nail head or secure the seams with joining tape. If you're able to extract the edge nails and secure edges seamlessly, it would be much better.

Step 7: Add Infill

You can start to add infill slowly using cork, sand, or rubber. This helps with the drainage fill. Ideally, the amount of infill you may need is around one to two pounds per square foot. Once done, you can rake or brush the blades to ensure that the fibers are upright to make it look more like a natural one.

Should I Hire a Company to Install Artificial Grass Around Pavers?
